Why are oil changes so important?

The humble oil change can be easy to overlook, but this basic maintenance item is actually one of the most important for your vehicle. Oil plays the extremely critical role of keeping your engine's fast-moving parts lubricated, which helps to:

  • Keep your engine cool
  • Reduce wear and tear
  • Improve engine efficiency
  • Improve engine longevity

So, why does oil need to be changed? Why does changing it make a difference? Unfortunately, oil doesn't last forever. It breaks down over time into a sludgy substance that can hamper your engine's ability to work efficiently. It can also get contaminated with dirt or the tiny metal particles that break from your engine's parts when they move against each other.

These impurities and contaminants can have devastating effects on your engine if left unchecked, which is why most vehicles call for an oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles or so, or every six months (whichever comes first). Keeping up with regular oil changes is one of the best things you can do to keep your engine running smoothly and avoid costly repairs in the future.

How do I know my oil needs changing?

The easiest way to tell if you need an oil change is by checking your owner's manual to see what the recommended intervals are for your vehicle. You might also have a sticker on the inside of your windshield that tells you the last time your vehicle was serviced and when you should schedule your next oil change. Your car might also illuminate an oil warning light to let you know that it's time for an appointment. Of course, you're always welcome to give us a call if you need help determining when your car needs service.

You can also check your oil yourself to see what sort of state it's in by using your car's dipstick to check the color of your oil. Fresh oil is golden-brown. If your car's oil is dark or sludgy, it's time for a change.

Other warning signs that your car is overdue for an oil change include:

  • Unusual engine noises, such as knocking
  • Smell of oil inside the car
  • Exhaust smoke
  • And other problems

Should you notice any of these warning signs, be sure to get in touch with our Ford service center in Baxley right away. These issues indicate that there is already a problem that needs attention, so we highly recommend getting in touch with us for an appointment as soon as you can so that we can help.
